Big Sandy creek Dairy Farm has been in operation in the state of Georgia since 1950, and the history of the Benkoski Family is interesting! In the beginning, Farmer John's granddaddy came over from Europe through Ellis Island, and settled in New York. He left a future wife in Europe. He told her he would send money and the she should find him in a community in New York City. He did in fact send the money and she was to ride a most famous ship, the Titanic.
Mary, Farmer John's grandmother, who had been crying because she was sad to leave her family, was not allowed to board the ship. The boarding officials thought that she had pinkeye. To her good fortune, those tears saved her life. She did in fact, cross on a different ship, and found her beau in New York City. They married, having 5 children. Farmer John's dad was one of the sons. In 1950, John Sr. decided to move to the South, avoiding snow and very high taxes in Connecticut. He wanted to farm near a hospital and a good school such as the University of Georgia. John, Sr. milked cows until his 80th birthday. Today, Farmer John, (John, Jr.) operates the farm as his father did.
